CogAT Test Prep At Big Brainbox

What is CogAT?

The┬аCognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is a norm-referenced test with multiple choice questions designed to measure a childтАЩs academic aptitude, gifted and problem-solving skills.┬аNorm-referenced tests are made to compare test takers to a large group of others at the same┬аage.┬аIt is used to evaluate the development of each student compared to their peers and often for entry into gifted and talented programs. The CogAT is about cognitive skills such as problem-solving and reasoning ability, rather than academic knowledge or intellectual ability.

It is made up of three main sections called batteries:

  1. Verbal Battery
  2. Quantitative Battery
  3. Non-Verbal Battery

┬а

The test is typically administered at school either on the computer or with pen and pencil. Expand the section below to learn and get yourself familiar with each part of the test.

Verbal
  • Picture/Verbal Analogies: Identify corresponding relationships between pairs of items or concepts (represented either with images or words, depending on the age of the student).
  • Sentence Completion: Complete sentences after either hearing or reading them.┬а
  • Picture/Verbal Classification: Classify given items or concepts based on their relationship to one another (represented either with images or words, depending on the age of the student), by selecting the item that fits with the rest of them.┬а

┬а

  • Number Analogies: Identify corresponding relationships between pairs of mathematical concepts or values represented with numbers, expressions, or images.
  • Number Series: Complete a series of numbers (or images representing numbers for younger ages) by deducing the underlying pattern.┬а
  • Number Puzzles: Solve a given problem using logic and mathematic operations; younger students will be given images that represent numbers and operations, and older students will solve for an unknown variable.
  • Figure Classification: Find a common denominator between a series of shapes, then select the shape that fits with them based on this classification.
  • Figure Matrices: In a 2X2 matrix, identify the changes from the top left square to the top right one, and apply the same changes to the bottom left square in order to determine what should appear in the bottom right one.┬а
  • Paper Folding: Determine the end result upon unfolding a hole-punched paper in a specific way.┬а
